Theme Instructions

No 'Theme Designer'?

If you don't have an option to launch the Theme Designer under Appearance > Template Editor, then you are using an earlier version of the template. Please use the instructions here.

Product Images

This theme is designed with square product images in mind. If you can stick to that, things will probably look neater!

How To Change the Highlight Colour

DESIGN TIP: Pick a colour that is prominent in your logo or products. Avoid light colours, as this will make the text very hard to read.

1. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > Template Editor. Then click 'Launch the Theme Designer'.

2. Open the Highlight Color tab and choose a color. Note that the color will not appear in the preview screen straight away.

3. Once you are finished customizing your store, click Save Settings in the top right.

How To Change the Fonts

1. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > Template Editor. Then click 'Launch the Theme Designer'.

2. Open the Fonts tab. Simply adjust the settings for the main and header fonts. The preview screen will automatically update to show you the result.

3. Once you are finished customizing your store, click Save Settings in the top right.

How To Create Your Own Slides

Software: You probably already have some photo-editing software that you use to prepare your product photos (if not, you should probably get some!). Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Fireworks are excellent if expensive, but there are plenty of others available.

DESIGN TIP: How your slides look is entirely up to you, of course, but a single, bold image usually works better than trying to show too much in one go. Similarly, if you are including text on a slide, keep it short and punchy!

Dimensions: Your slides need to be 72 dpi and 950 pixels wide. There is no particular requirement for height – the slides on the demo site are 425 pixels high, but you can vary this if you want. Whatever you choose, keep your slides all the same height – it just looks neater!

File Type: Save your slides as jpg images.

File Size: Try to keep the file size as small as possible to minimise load-time when someone first looks at your store. You can do this by setting the jpg quality (or compression) fairly low, just not so low that it makes the image look rubbish.

Maximum Number of Slides: 5.

How To Add Your Own Slides

1. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > Template Editor. Then click 'Launch the Theme Designer'.

2. Open the Slideshow Settings tab. You will see the three demo slides already installed. Just click on the Choose File button to upload a new slide and replace the existing one. The preview screen will automatically update to show you the result.

3. Once you are finished customizing your store, click Save Settings in the top right.

How To Remove the Slideshow

1. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > Template Editor. Then click 'Launch the Theme Designer'.

2. Open the Slideshow Settings tab. Unclick the Slideshow On? button. The preview screen will automatically update to show you the result.

3. Once you are finished customizing your store, click Save Settings in the top right.

How To Have a Single Slide that Doesn’t Move

If there is just one slide enabled, then this will be displayed the whole time.

How To Create Your Own Full-screen Background

DESIGN TIP: How your backgrounds look is entirely up to you, of course, but it’s important to avoid anything too distracting from the main content of the page. That’s why the demo site uses heavily blurred versions of the slideshow images.

Dimensions: Your slides need to be 72 dpi and 2500 pixels wide by 1600 pixels high.

File Type: Save your slides as jpg images.

File Size: Try to keep the file size as small as possible to minimise load-time when someone first looks at your store. You can do this by setting the jpg quality (or compression) fairly low, just not so low that it makes the image look rubbish. Using a blurred image and keeping down the range of colours both really help with reducing file size.

Maximum Number of Full-screen Backgrounds: 10. Note that there is no need to have the same number of backgrounds and slides.

How To Add Your Own Full-screen Background

1. In your Highwire dashboard, go to Appearance > Template Editor. Then click 'Launch the Theme Designer'.

3. Once you are finished customizing your store, click Save Settings in the top right.
